The city of Santiago de Querétaro in central Mexico is taking a bold step into the future by lighting up its historic downtown with modern LED technology while maintaining its old-world charm. This transformative lighting project, spearheaded by Cree LED, in collaboration with IDC Componentes (IDC2) and local partner Ilumiled, is set to replace 1,600 outdated sodium-based lamps with advanced LED fixtures. The new solution combines heritage preservation with next-level energy efficiency, resulting in a brighter, more sustainable downtown that still feels like home.
Authorized by the state and municipal governments, the large-scale upgrade aims to modernize Santiago de Querétaro’s downtown lighting without disrupting its classic aesthetic. Cree LED’s JR5050C E Class LEDs were selected for their ability to replicate the warmth and glow of the original sodium lamps while significantly boosting light output and quality. Operating at a 2200K correlated color temperature (CCT), these LEDs are engineered to capture the soft, golden hue of traditional street lighting, ensuring that the city’s historical essence is preserved.
A Project with Profound Impact
Beyond aesthetics, the upgrade brings notable environmental and economic benefits. The new LED fixtures, incorporating Sciolux LED modules from IDC Componentes, are projected to cut power consumption by 58% over the next decade. This remarkable reduction in energy use translates into annual savings of approximately $80,000 USD, making it a smart investment for both taxpayers and the city’s infrastructure.
“Maintaining the integrity of lighting in our beautiful 18th-century downtown area was vital, but we also recognized the need to modernize with better energy efficiency,” said Luis Nava, Mayor of Santiago de Querétaro. “Working with IDC Componentes and Ilumiled enabled us to find the right LEDs to keep the look of our lighting consistent while offering us much-needed energy and cost savings. We are seeing double the light output with less than half of the energy consumption.”
